Did Apple kill smashing ad for Newsday iPad app?

When a new ad for Newsday's iPhone and iPad app emerged recently, many laughed. Even though, to some discerning eyes, it was obvious what was going to happen at the end of the commercial.
The iPad would get smashed.
Still, millions seemed to find it amusing, though among that number there might not be any lawyers for Apple. According to Network World, it may well be that Apple insisted the ad be ceased and desisted.
Indeed, Network World says it received an e-mail from someone who claimed to work at Newsday that read: "Newsday got a cease and desist letter threatening all of our apps, if we did not remove the commercial immediately. They took exception to the fact that the (iPad) glass shattered into large jagged pieces...Your instincts are correct."
Perhaps this was always going to end in the need for handkerchiefs. No one likes to see their products mutilated, even if, in some way, the mutilation was intended to reflect the product's benefits.
Some might think, though, that the most startling part of the ad was the line: "The new Newsday app is better than the newspaper in all kinds of ways." Now that, some might feel, is a real denigration of one's own product.
I have reached out to Apple to wonder whether the company might have lodged an objection, and I'll update.
